CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
All volunteer positions are one year (in this case, from August 1, 2026, to August 1, 2027). We typically do capacity check-ins by the end of the year, at which point any volunteer is welcome and encouraged to remain on The Vermin’s collective and continue working either in the same role, or take on new/different responsibilities. While all volunteers take on very specific roles, being a volunteer with The Vermin also means joining our larger collective. We pride ourselves on being a space for developing skills collectively, building cultural and political community, and exploring alternative models of artistic collaboration.
Social Media Manager
We’re looking for a volunteer to handle our social media accounts – primarily Instagram, and occasionally Twitter. The Vermin’s social media manager is responsible for crafting and managing a social-media calendar, promoting the latest issue of The Vermin, promoting various programming, and generally directing our public presence on social media. While self-direction is critical for this position, The Vermin’s social media manager will work closely with The Vermin’s visuals team and will have design support for making various posts. - Duration and workload: The Vermin’s social media manager will work with the collective for a term beginning on August 1, 2026 and ending August 1, 2027. The volunteer role will have a flexible and fluctuating workload between the publishing cycle’s peaks, but will rarely go beyond 5 hours a week.
- Incentive: The Vermin is an entirely volunteer-run publication, and all profits of the magazine go into the production cost of the magazine. While we regrettably cannot offer compensation, we consider our anti-capitalist DIY ethos to be our strength.
- What we’re looking for:
- 1. Political alignment with the Vermin’s mandate, which is to platform radical, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist, and anti-colonial voices and contribute to revolutionary cultural production within the imperial core.
2. Applicants should either be based in Toronto or can travel to Toronto for major events. While this role is remote, the bulk of in-person activities happen locally.
3. The successful applicant would benefit from previous experience with Canva and/or Adobe Creative Cloud. While you will be working with a design team, being able to produce materials yourself is an asset.
4. Strong project management skills and self-direction
5. A unique voice and vision for our social media.

Distributor
Help The Vermin fly from the presses! We are seeking a volunteer to fill the role of magazine distributor. As a distributor, you will primarily be responsible for contacting stockists to inquire about replenishing stock with copies of The Vermin’s print publication, sending invoices to stockists and collecting payment from stockists, and scouting potential new stockists to house The Vermin. The distributor will deliver copies of the magazine to stockists in need of replenishment and will fulfill online orders by mail.
- Duration and workload: The Vermin’s distributor will work with the collective for a term beginning on August 1, 2026 and ending August 1, 2027. The distributor’s workload varies depending on when stock requires replenishment at our partner stockists. However, distributors will typically not spend more than 5 hours a week on their tasks. We typically do capacity check-ins by the end of the year, at which point any volunteer is welcome and encouraged to remain on The Vermin’s collective and continue working either in the same role, or take on new/different responsibilities.

2. The successful applicant would benefit from knowledge of the Toronto publishing/book-store landscape and how to liaise and communicate with distributors. Knowledge of distribution beyond the Toronto market is an asset but not absolutely necessary.
3. This role is in-person. Ideally, the distributor will live in Toronto with easy access to Toronto’s west end, where most of the magazine’s stockists are located.

Treasurer and Grant-Writer
The Vermin is seeking a volunteer to join our grant writing team. As a grant writer, you will work alongside the rest of the grant writing team to seek out and research viable grants and other funding sources, co-draft and re-draft applications for various grants, and assist or lead the team in submitting application materials to the appropriate portals. Teamwork, self-direction, and an ability to meet deadlines are critical for the position, but the ideal addition to the grant writing team will have the versatility to shift into leading and supporting roles as the need arises and without top-down direction.
- Duration and workload: The Vermin’s resident will work with the collective for a term beginning on August 1, 2026 and ending August 1, 2027. Grant writers’ workloads vary depending on the scope of a current target grant and project timelines, but grant writers typically do not spend more than 5 hours a week on their tasks.
