Publishing Residency
Our nest is your nest. The Vermin is launching a new publishing residency program! With the aim of keeping the membrane between The Vermin and the world as porous as possible for our (still-gestating) Issue 04, we are inviting a resident to steer the magazine’s visuals for one publishing cycle. As an experimental publication, our publishing process places great emphasis on the intersections between written content and a publication’s form as a visual, material art object. This residency is for editors whose editorial practices centre the intersections between written content and form – particularly editors who are interested in publishing, book arts, and design.
Our publishing resident will work closely with The Vermin’s editorial and visuals teams to develop the visual language for our fourth issue, providing artistic direction, overseeing the design process as it relates to the written content, and managing the printing process. While self-direction is critical for this position, the publishing resident will work with a number of graphic designers and editors. Moreover, The Vermin is a space of mentorship, collaborative work, and skill-sharing and this residency will entail continued guidance and support.
- Incentive: The Vermin is an entirely volunteer-run publication, and all profits of the magazine go into the production cost of the magazine. While we regrettably cannot offer compensation, we consider our anti-capitalist DIY ethos to be our strength. The Vermin is a platform to develop skills collectively, build a cultural community, and explore alternative models of artistic collaboration.
- Duration and workload: The Vermin’s resident will work with the collective for a term beginning on August 1, 2026 and ending August 1, 2027. The residency will have a flexible and fluctuating workload between the publishing cycle’s peaks, but will rarely go beyond 5 hours a week. Our peak workload will likely be in the winter/spring, but will slow down significantly in the summer since the publication will launch by then.
- What we’re looking for:
- Political alignment with the Vermin’s mandate, which is to platform radical, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist, and anti-colonial voices and contribute to revolutionary cultural production within the imperial core
- Applicants should either be based in Toronto or can travel to Toronto for major events. While this residency is remote, the bulk of in-person activities happen locally.
- The successful applicant would benefit from previous experience with InDesign or the willingness to learn Experience with editorial work in some capacity (either in producing artist books, editing, being part of a publishing team, etc.)
- Strong project management skills and the ability to lead a team through multiple deadlines, from design to printing of the final issue
How to apply: Please email a CV, cover letter, and a portfolio of relevant work samples (i.e., magazines you’ve worked on, books you’ve made, etc.) to theverminmag@gmail.com with the subject line “Publishing Residency” by July 15, 2026.
Social Media Manager
We’re looking for a volunteer to handle our social media accounts – primarily Instagram, and occasionally Twitter. The Vermin’s social media manager is typically responsible for crafting and managing a social-media calendar, promoting the latest issue of The Vermin, promoting various programming, and generally directing our public presence on social media. While self-direction is critical for this position, The Vermin’s social media manager will work closely with The Vermin’s visuals team and will have design support for making various posts. While all volunteers take on very specific roles, being a volunteer with The Vermin also means joining our larger collective. We pride ourselves on being a space for developing skills collectively, building cultural and political community, and exploring alternative models of artistic collaboration. - Duration and workload: The Vermin’s social media manager will work with the collective for a term beginning on August 1, 2026 and ending August 1, 2027. The volunteer role will have a flexible and fluctuating workload between the publishing cycle’s peaks, but will rarely go beyond 5 hours a week. We typically do capacity check-ins by the end of the year, at which point any volunteer is welcome and encouraged to remain on The Vermin’s collective and continue working either in the same role, or take on new/different responsibilities.
