THE VERMIN

The Vermin is a new critical magazine based in Toronto, Ontario platforming the subversive and expository.

What is The Vermin?

We are a newly founded critical magazine featuring short and long-form writing in non-fiction and fiction, criticism, and visual arts. Based in Toronto, Ontario we are a small (but growing) group of writers and artists working on a voluntary basis.

Our vision is to create a magazine which platforms the filthier aspects of our lives often hidden from plain view. No subject is off limits, and we aim to encourage a pluralism in literature that actively confronts—and rejects—the delusions of our aesthetic sanitation.

Our team!

Nazanin Zarepour, Editor-in-Chief
Nazanin is a writer, editor, researcher, photographer, and organizer based in Toronto. Nazanin’s editorial, writing, and research work is driven by one perennial objective: to deeply engage with critical perspectives that have been pushed to the margins and periphery. The Vermin Magazine was founded in the same spirit, to sweep all the pieces of matter which have been blown into the corners of the room back into the centre.

Mohamed Serageldin, Associate Editor
If not conducting a deep (,self-initiated) study on a topic of interest, Mohamed edits or occasionally writes. They are currently living on unceded Algonquin territory (Ottawa).

Fahdad Atin, Designer
Graphic designer based in Toronto, Fahdad seeks beauty in the banality of the human experience and strives to incorporate a sense of whimsy into every aspect of his work.

Monica Chung, Designer
Monica (she/her) is a Toronto-based designer. She values collaborative work in design and the connections built upon it.

Rebecca Peng, Copy-editor
Rebecca is a writer, producer, and long furby enthusiast, currently living on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

Sara Frank, Copy-editor
Sara is a writer living in Toronto.

Sarah Sarofim, Copy-editor
Sarah is a visual artist, editor and writer based between Cairo and Toronto. She holds a BA in Art History and Visual Studies from the University of Toronto and was the 2020 Fall Editorial Resident at Canadian Art. Sarofim's projects often begin with sociolinguistics and draw from archival images and public space to investigate notions of performance and erasure. Sarofim’s work has been exhibited in Cairo, Toronto, Houston and New York and published in Canadian Art Magazine, Qumra Journal, Femme Art Review, Photo ED Magazine and other publications.
